NOT 'JUST ANOTHER' LOG CABIN - 3 hours.
Workshop includes discussion of log cabin variations, specifically the dynamic differences between regular log cabin, and off-center log cabin, sewing technique and design exploration. NOT 'JUST ANOTHER' LOG CABIN - 6 hours.
Full day workshop, with morning spent as above to develop individual designs for wall quilts (approximately 16 blocks). Covers pattern drafting, making multiple copies for foundation piecing, and possible design variations. Afternoon- begin sewing, discussion of color usage, variations, etc. Students should be able to complete several blocks by end of class as a start for their individual projects. Recommended: Beginners (w/some sewing experience, and above). Can also be offered as a "non-sewing" class, continuing with fabric mockups.
PUTTING PATCHWORK IN PERSPECTIVE:
Presents the use of 'non-traditional grids' for the drafting of patchwork blocks to give the illusion of depth. Will include how to draft a variety of grids (as well as many ideas in handouts), selecting appropriate blocks, use of color to add emphasis to the design. Emphasis will be on using blocks that can be sewn with 'sew and flip' and freezer paper to eliminate what would otherwise be hundreds of templates. Appropriate for developing wall- hanging size pieces. Recommended: Intermediate to Advanced. Full Day. Also 3 hour 'design only' class.
CREATIVE FOUNDATION BLOCKS:
Design simple blocks to be done on freezer paper foundations using 'sew and flip' [no templates] to create a unique quilt or wall hanging. All technical aspects covered . . . (including several methods for making multiple foundations, sewing techniques) as well as experimenting with various block arrangements to explore the many possibilities available. Handouts include many "suggested blocks" for those intimidated by design. Recommend: Advanced Beginner and up [6 hours. several blocks completed to experiment with arrangement, variety, arrived at by all participants].
SUPER STARS with style!:
6 hour class, suitable for 1.5 days if desired for more in depth exploration. Unusual and unique six pointed 'off center' stars are designed and pieced using the foundation method on freezer paper. Class includes handouts for several 10" blocks, and covers designing your own, any size, with a simple format, free from math and protractors. Ex. can be seen in 1999 IQA Raffle quilt : SUPER STARS TWO, and Fall 1999 Fairfield Processing Corp. Advertisement.
SNOWFLAKES, or COLORED CRYSTALS:
(Example in 1995 Winter issue of American Quilter Magazine). Freezer paper hexagons (made up of 6 wedges) produce intricate snowflake blocks. Three different 'sew and flip' flakes are used for the wall hanging or table runner. Class covers making multiple foundations from the handout and step-by-step instructions for the template free sewing technique. Usually, one block is completed in class. (Can be done in a variety of colors to resemble kaleidoscope blocks instead of snowflakes if desired.) 6 hours- Advanced Beginner and up.
HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
This class, new for 2000 covers all the introductory information for foundation piecing. The thrust of the workshop is to develop unique, individual, floral gardens from the numerous 4", 6" and 6" x 9" blocks given. Class work will complete several blocks, then move on to composition, 'sewable' arrangements, variations, and preplanning an entire project. Handouts include all the floral and foliage blocks required, as well as 'cut-up' and organize a plan for your individual project. All ability levels are welcome, but a basic understanding of foundation piecing is helpful. *Small fabric packets available for purchase if desired. Full Day - 6 hours This class is also suitable for a two day workshop in which the latter part of the class (composition, arrangement, developing borders, etc.) can be explored in greater depth.
Classes based on patterns:
Iris Garden, Daffodils, Poinsettia, Birds of Paradise, Lattice Garden, Day Lilies, etc. If desired, the available patterns can be used as the basis for workshops. Each would require purchase of the pattern and a freezer paper foundation. Due to the size, only a portion of the project could be completed in class, but with a full understanding of how to continue to completion. If chosen, supply list will be issued from the selected pattern. No kits available. 6 hours- recommended level- intermediate.
